SECMOL Unique School of Ladakh

Its impact extends beyond academics, to promoting environmental management and social responsibility. SECMOL's failure story influenced Bollywood. The story of SECMOL reached the masses when the movie '3 Idiots' was released. You must have seen the movie '3 Idiots'. Actor Aamir Khan played the role of Phunsukh Wangdoo in it, inspired by Sonam Wangchuck's real-life efforts and innovations in education.

The campus of the school is great

The scenic region of Ladakh known for its serene beauty and rugged terrain is also home to an educational revolution led by Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer, activist and innovator. Recognizing the shortcomings of the educational system, he decided to create a model that would meet the specific needs of the region. Wangchuk's vision led to the establishment of the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) in 1988. The initiative was born out of the need to reduce the failure rate among Ladakhi students, especially in board examinations.




Emphasis on practical skills

Wangchuk envisioned a place where children could learn practical skills, engage with environmental management and develop a sense of social responsibility. Since its inception, SECMOL has been promoting educational reforms in Ladakh. According to statistics from the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) in 1996, 95 percent of students failed their board exams. In the next two decades, this number has continuously reduced to 25 percent.

SECMOL course is also unique

SECMOL's campus in Leh is a place where solar energy is not only taught but is an important part of their lives. The buildings here are designed in such a way that the entire premises are powered by solar energy. Children from almost different backgrounds especially from rural and underprivileged areas come to study here.

A mobile lab is a school campus
