रामायण को हिंदू धर्म के दो महान ऐतिहासिक ग्रंथों में गिना जाता है। लेकिन रामायण केवल हिंदू धर्म या आज के भारत तक ही सीमित नहीं है बल्कि इंडोनेशिया, मलेशिया, थाईलैंड, कंबोडिया, फिलीपींस, वियतनाम आदि में भी प्रचलित है। 1987-1988 के दौरान रामायण पर आधारित एक टीवी सीरियल भी बना जो काफी लोकप्रिय हुआ। रामायण का भारतीय लोगों की जीवन शैली, सामाजिक जीवन और पारिवारिक जीवन पर बहुत प्रभाव है। प्रत्येक पति-पत्नी की तुलना राम-सीता से, पुत्र की राम से, भाई की लक्ष्मण या भरत से और मित्र की तुलना सुग्रीव से की जाती है। राम को आदर्श राजा माना जाता है। रामायण का हर पात्र समाज के लिए एक आदर्श बना हुआ है।

This is the first and the longest of the seven chapters of Ramacharitamanas. These include, among other tales, the story of Shiva and Parvati. The chapter then describes the birth of Rama in Ayodhya, his childhood, the protection of the sage Vishwamitra’s yajna, entry into Janakpur, breaking of Lord Shiva’s bow, marriage to Sita and return to Ayodhya.
